Inlay/Onlay

Inlays and Onlays are indirect fillings made of porcelain that fit into and onto the tooth. Used to make the tooth stronger by holding it together while retaining a natural and aesthetically pleasing colour. These fillings are similar to regular fillings (composite fillings), with the exception being that they are permanently cemented by the dentist and are made in the dental labratory as opposed to being molded to shape in the mouth.

Inlays and Onlays are used in cases when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a filling but the tooth do not require a crown. Definition: A dental bonding is a dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and shape of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from decay or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material. Tooth preparation is usually required before placing a dental restoration.

This process involves cutting the tooth usually with a dental drill to make space for the planned restoration, remove any dental decay and structurally unsound tooth. If permanent restoration cannot be carried out after tooth preparation, temporary restoration is done. Inlay In dentistry, an inlay is an indirect restoration (filling) consisting of a solid substance (as gold or porcelain) fitted to a cavity in a tooth and cemented into place. Onlay An onlay is the same as an inlay, except that it extends to replace a cusp. Crowns are onlays which completely cover all surfaces of a tooth.

Overview
Inlays and Onlays are used in cases when there is deficient tooth structure to support a filling but the tooth do not require a crown.Used for repairing damaged teeth, made from a casting of your bite and baked in the lab, these provide a very strong repair made of porcelain that fit into and onto the affected tooth.Their purpose is to make the tooth stronger by holding it together while retaining a natural and aesthetically pleasing colour.

Procedure
These fillings have two different forms:Inlays : which fit into the space remaining after the decay of an old filling or cavity has been removed.Onlays (partial crowns): which sit on the tooth and builds up its shape.Receiving porcelain inlays or onlays typically requires 2-3 visits in the clinic. In the first visit, the decay of an old filling or cavity will be removed and an impression will taken. During the second visit, this temporary filling will removed and the indirect filling is going to be fitted.
